AOL Image Search

Since 2003 AOL offers an image search. Initially, the content was used by Google Images since 2016, the content comes from Bing Images. Both when using Google and now at Bing, the results are not identical to those of AOL, which is due to different ranking criteria and filters. The results can be limited to colors, image size, type of photo and type of license.

»Image search results are sorted by relevance, with the most relevant images appearing first. These listings are administered, sorted, and maintained by Google. Google considers a number of factors when determining whether an image is relevant to your search request. Because these methods are not entirely foolproof, it's possible some inappropriate pictures may be included among the images you see.« Source

Greg R. Notess (2003): »AOL Search now has an Images tab for image searching. It has no advanced search and only a single query box. While it certainly appears to be based on the Google image search, the AOL version often has fewer results, a more strict adult filter, and may have a different ranking than at Google.« Source

Danny Sullivan (2007): »AOL’s image search is powered by Google, but as with web search, you might find slight differences because the exact same image database might not be hit and there might be ranking differences. Still, AOL will be pretty similar to Google.« Source
