Sohu was registered in 1996 as ITC Aitexin Electronic Technology and was founded by Charles Zhang. The website was launched in 1997 as an internet portal. On February 25, 1998, ITC launches Sohu, a search engine focused on the Chinese Internet, in Beijing. ITC is officially renamed to Sohu.

2004 Sohu develops the search machine Sogou which receives its own Web operational readiness level. From 2007 both search engines will be offered for selection and from about 2008 only Sogou will be offered. Since about 2012 Sohu no longer has its own search results page, but links directly to the results page of Sogou.
