ALVIS Search Engine News

ALVIS Search Engine News was a news blog search engine that merged content via RSS and made it searchable and findable. The news articles came from predefined news sites and contained the latest articles as well as archives from various popular web news and blogs.

The AlvisP2P IR engine was a special search engine developed as part of a European research project. The goal was to develop an open source prototype of a distributed, semantically based search engine for the automatic analysis of full texts, which optimized the result output.

Alvis was developed by the Alvis Consortium, consisting of eleven partners from six countries of the European Community, Switzerland and China. The research project ran from 2004 to 2006. The full-text content came from Wikipedia, the resulting search engine Alvis Wikipedia Search was published after the project.

Another project using ALVIS Technology was the Alvis Wikipedia Search, a special search engine that analyzed Wikipedia content using semantic approaches. Wikipedia content was exported to the ALVIS environment. This determines its own static ranking and enables content categorisation, which enables a more targeted search.

In Norse mythology, Alvis ("all-wise") was a dwarf. Thor's daughter, Thrud, was promised to Alvis in exchange for which Alvis made weapons for the gods. Thor devised a plan to stop Alvis from marrying his daughter. He told Alvis that, because of his small height, he had to prove his wisdom. Alvis agreed and Thor asked Alvis many, many questions, which he knew would give Alvis a chance to display his extensive knowledge. Thor made the tests last until after the sun had risen -- all dwarves turn to stone when exposed to sunlight. Alvis was so busy showing off that he did not realize that the sun had risen and when he was caught in the light Alvis was petrified and Thrud remained unmarried. Source
