Fireball [Video Search]

Fireball was the first German search engine developed in 1996 by the Department of Computer Science at the Technische Universität Berlin (TUB) under the working title “flipper”. In 1997 further development followed by the publisher Gruner + Jahr, the project group KIT (TUB) and the Neofonie GmbH. The engine is renamed in “Kitty”. In June 1997 the search engine launched as “Fireball” with a robot called „Kit-Fireball“. Than Fireball starts cooperation with AltaVista in 1998 to offer a global search. 1999 Lycos Europe purchased Fireball. In the beginning of 2000 Fireball was the biggest German search engine with13.5 Mio web pages, 68.7 Mio page views and 14 Mio unique visitors. In August 2000 Fireball holds a volume of 22% of the German search market. From 2003 to 2008 Fireball uses Yahoo and from 2008 till 2009 Google. In March 2009 Fireball was sold to the Swiss based Ambrosia AG and they start reusing the Fireball own search engine again. In 2010 Fireball optimized the side for mobile devices, but they didn’t offer a mobile side or a mobile app [kd2015].
