UFOCrwaler was an example for a highly specialized vertical search engine. Based on manually selected web sites UFOCrawler concentrates on anomalies, UFO sights and so on. The problem of this kind of engine is, that you regularly have to check, if your links work and are still relevant. That means on the one hand site you need a height intellectual effort. On the other hand side this highly specialized engine generates only a small audience that often didn’t justify your efforts [KD2017].
»What is UFOCRAWLER? The answer to that question is simple, well sort of. The UFOCRAWLER is a new type of search engine which focuses on a very narrow set of information in order to help seperate the wheat from the chaff. The idea being that in another large search engine you may put in a search for say "ufo" and get back 45 million results ranging from true results about UFO's to the band UFO to even UFO mugs when what you really want information on is unidentified flying objects. So by limiting the number of URLs which are indexed then we can limit the number of false positives. To further decrease the possibility of getting false positives we also moderate the URLs entered. What this means is that we don't just crawl the web and dump everything into our index, instead we try to keep it to website or pages about the subject matter at hand. This again helps us to deliver results which are more on target for what your looking for.« Source
»IBM and Yahoo teamed up to bring to you UFOCrawler, a search engine that is about finding sources on “UFO Sightings, time travel, conspiracy theories and anomalies.” For example, a search on area 51 returns 7,904 sources, unfortunately some of the results do not look all that great. It is important to note that all the other tabbed searches (i..e Web Images Video Audio Directory Local News) take you to Yahoo, the Enterprise tab takes you to UFOCrawler results. This is powered by IBM OmniFind Yahoo! Edition enterprise and brought to you by the Anomalies Network.« Source
